The first two match-days of UEFA 2012 Qualifying have finished. Because some groups have six teams and others have five, some countries didn’t play on both days and therefore have only played one match in qualifying.

Many of the nations expected to qualify for the tournament are doing well including Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and England. A few other countries are struggling so far and could miss out. The most notable would be Portugal, who has only one point from two matches. Teams who are overachieving a bit including Montenegro (two wins from two matches) and Turkey (two wins from two matches).

Overall, the standings are likely to change with many matches left in qualification. Below are the group standings through matches of Tuesday, September 7, 2010.

Ireland 3-1 Andorra Recap

The Irish remained unbeaten in Euro 2012 qualifying with a solid 3-1 home win against Andorra.

The home side was heavily favored going into the match and would take an early lead. Kevin Kilbane scored in the 14th minute and then Kevin Doyle added one in the 41st as Ireland led 2-0 just before halftime. Andorra would cut the lead in half just before halftime with a Christian Jorge Martinez Munoz but that’s as close as the match would ever get.

A second half goal from Robbie Keane would give Ireland a 3-1 lead and put the match out of reach for Andorra. Ireland are now 2-0-0 in qualifying and in great shape to challenge for the group title.

England continued their UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying with a trip to face Switzerland on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. These two countries are expected to be the two teams contending for first place in Group G.

Switzerland 1-3 England Recap

England would score early and hold on for an important road win in Euro 2012 qualifying.

The opening goal was from Wayne Rooney in the 10th minute as England had a 1-0 lead into the second half. The turning point in the match was a red card on Switzerland’s Stephan Lichtsteiner in the 65th minute for a late challenge on John Milner. It wasn’t a straight red but his second yellow.

After the red card, Adam Johnson would run into a through ball and calmly finish to give England a 2-0 lead in the 69th minute. The Swiss, now playing with 10 men, would fight back and cut the lead in half with a Xherdan Shaqiri 71sth minute. The goal was a fantastic strke from Shaqiri and put the momentum back with the home side.

England would recover after conceding the goal and Darren Bent scored in the 88th minute to seal the victory. For England, it is a crucial win in what will probably be their toughest away match in qualifying. Switzerland needed to get something out of this but it is only the first match for them in qualifying and they still have plenty of time.

Argentina hosted Spain in an international friendly match on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.

Argentina 4-1 Spain Recap

Argentina would get goals from Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero, and Carlos Tevez as they beat Spain 4-1.

The match was a friendly in Buenos Aires which featured many of the top players from around the world. The opening goal was from Messi on a quick counterattack in the 10th minute. Higuain would add the second in the 13th minute was a clinical finish after getting a through ball and dribbling around the goalkeeper. The third goal, which came from Carlos Tevez in the 34th minute, was a result of a slip from Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina after receiving a back pass.

There would be two more goals in the match, both in the second half, but Argentina held onto their three goal lead by the final whistle. The other goals were from Spain’s Fernando Llorente in the 84th minute and Sergio Aguero in the 90th minute.

It was a fantastic performance from Argentina and poor performance from Spain.

After getting off to a good start last week it is Switzerland next for England as they look to make it two wins out of two in Group G. This will be the first match Switzerland have played having not featured last Tuesday and will hope the home advantage will spur them on to victory over England at St Jakob Park.

Scotland vs Liechtenstein : Preview.

Despite putting in a good performance last week Scotland failed to come away with all three points so they are expected to go all out against Liechtenstein at Hampden this Tuesday night. A more attacking line up is expected from Scotland for the match with Liechtenstein as they have struggled to score goals of late.

Craig Levein has announced that Scotland will adopt a different approach for the match against Liechtenstein with Kris Boyd and James McFadden coming into the starting line up to provide Kenny Miller with more attacking support. A 4-4-2 formation is likely to be adopted by the Scotland manager so Liechtenstein will have to prepare themselves well in defence.

In their opening match Liechtenstein lost 4-0 to Spain at home and they will be massive underdogs for their trip to Scotland as well. At present Liechtenstein are currently sitting 100 places behind Scotland in the world rankings so a home win for Scotland is very much expected.

Switzerland vs England : Preview.

On the opening day of qualifying Switzerland were the only team not involved in Group G so they start their campaign this Tuesday against England in what will be a tough tie for the Swiss. After sitting back and watching the opening matches Switzerland will be aware of what is required of them against England if they are to claim three valuable points.

Having had an extra five days to prepare themselves for this match Switzerland should be fitter than England for this tie and may fancy their chances more as the game goes on. If they can keep it tight to begin with, Switzerland may be able to take advantage should England tire in the second half.

After more revelations about Wayne Rooney’s love for prostitutes were revealed in the tabloids this week it remains to be seen whether the England striker will start the match against Switzerland with some reports that Fabio Capello may leave him out depending on his mental state. Should he be left out for the match in Switzerland it will be a blow for England as Rooney and Defoe linked up so well in the 4-0 win over Bulgaria.

Playing at home Switzerland should provide a more stern opposition for England than Bulgaria did at Wembley last week and England will have to work hard to claim all three points. Despite the absence of a number of key players England still have bags of quality throughout the side i reckon they will prove to be too strong for Switzerland. There won’t be much in it but England should just sneak it.
